Rome in 6 hours - March 25, 2003
After we had soaked up the truly once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Vatican,
we cabbed it to the Colloseum. We had walked from the hotel to through
the Spanish Steps to the Vatican but it was getting late in the day and we
didn't want to miss the last of the daylight at the Colloseum. We arrived
at just the right time to take a few daylight shots before nightfall. The
first and most obvious observation is, that thing it huge! But then
to walk around it and consider its construction and age is truly impressive.
I'm sure somehting that large could be built today but considering
the technology and building materials of the time, wow!
The Colloseum is in a part of Rome that I wish we had more time to explore.
It is in the old part of the city and many truly ancient sites are
there. There is a lot of retoration going on both at the Colloseum
and other sites in the area. We walked about 1/3 way around it and
then wandered down an alley to an area that turned out to be closed. As
we walked, the sun set and the color of the sky became almost purple. The
lighting on the Colloseum and various other things around made for some amazing
sights. Though the pictures came out great, there's no substitute for
the real thing.
There's so much more of Rome I'd like to see someday but that was a good
teaser. To have taken in all of that in just a few hours was pretty
amazing. It's almost sensory overload!
And now, a word about the pictures themselves. I have just gotten an
HP Photosmart 850. This camera is truly amazing and I hope to learn
how to take better and better pictures as time goes on. These pictures,
I feel, came out rather well. The ones posted here are reduced in size
significantly. The originals are 4 mega pixels and are less compressed
than these. If, for some reason, you'd like to see any of the originals,
please ask and I'll be happy to send them to you. They're about 1MB
each, give or take.
